The Division of Audio Visual Arts (DAVA)- Department of Media Studies at the Faculty of Humanities (FH), Notre Dame University-Louaize (NDU), main campus, organized between February 17 and 24, 2018, a two-day film workshop/competition titled, “The Film Language: How to Make Static Objects Speak.”
During the workshop, students learned the importance of each main element that constitutes the art of filmmaking and its role in delivering messages through the unsaid. Participants were mostly those interested pursuing majors in Cinematography, Filmmaking, and Television Techniques and Aesthetics.
The workshop aimed to introduce to the young generation a new way of expression through moving images and to help them intelligently make use of their motionless environment. This expressive art of storytelling reflects a certain situation or status-quo that does not rely on the common communication tool: “words.”
During the first session, camera and hands-on shooting training was given in addition to some explanations related to the elements of filmmaking and the ways of finding expression through images. Students were given the entire week to prepare for the competition and to shoot their ideas, which were assessed, edited, and finalized during the subsequent Saturday session. A jury comprising of DMS professionals reviewed and evaluated the submissions.
The wining student received a trophy and a 50 percent scholarship grant for his first semester tuition at NDU, while the second and third place winners were each granted a 25 percent scholarship grant for their first semester at NDU. All participants received a ‘Certificate of Attendance.’
